do yourself a favor and DONT try and pull start it... most likely the exhaust lash is too big and the decompression pin is not hitting the lifter

i called a yamaha dealer today and they told me that it was the brushes in the starter..because if you put it in gear and get it to move a little it may turn over or start.if it don't then the starter relay ticks..i have a few honda 300ex starters and one of them is rebuilt. will a honda starter fit a yamaha..??? are they different..???

my relay did the same exact thing, and I was told it was the brushes same as you, changed the brushes and it still just clicked so i ended up swapping relays anyway, problem solved :)

SHort across the two large lugs of the relay with a screwdriver (ignore the sparks). If the starter now turns easily, but all you hear is a click when you press the start button, the relay is bad.

If the starter still doesn't turn while shorting across the relay (and you've said things get hot), then the starter is somehow siezed - either engine won't turn over due to some problem or the gears between the starter and the one-way are binding.
