    Newbie FAQ - Raptor 700

This thread will cover all the newbie questions that seem to be the most common when someone first gets a Raptor 700. If you see one missing let me know and I will add it.

Where do I buy parts from?

This site is supported by some great sponsors that can you get anything you may be looking for.

What should my first mod be?

Your first mod should be a fuel controller. It has been proven that with just a fuel controller and the stock filter/pipe with the spark arrestor removed you can gain a decent amount of hp.

    What is a fuel controller?

A fuel controller is a unit that will piggyback onto your stock computer that lets you adjust the amount of fuel that is being fed to the motor.

What is the best fuel controller?

As a community we have found that either one of the Power Commanders is a good choice. So a PC3 (Power Commander 3) or PC5 (Power Commander 5) do a great job.

    What is a map?

A map is a file that loads into a Power Commander which fine tunes how much fuel you add or remove to the stock fuel program.

Is it safe to pull the spark arrestor and take off the air box lid without a fuel controller?

No, you need a fuel controller.

    What is the "Big 3"?

The "Big 3" you might see referred to when talking about the Raptor 700 is talking about the first three mods that should be added to the 700 to achieve substantial gain. Those mods are a intake, pipe and fuel controller.

What is the best single pipe?

There are some good and bad singles so read the threads below and make a educated choice.

What is the best dual pipe?

They all come up with pretty close power wise. Choose one that you like as far as sound and looks. Check out the "Dual shootout" thread for more information.

Will the front suspension from a YFZ fit on a Raptor 700?

The 04-09 YFZ 450 front clips will interchange with the 700's but the shocks will lower the front end 1.5"

Will adding power affect my Raptors reliability?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Someone give me a good answer for this xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How can I remove the 5th gear speed limiter?

    Need Link

Why should I install a steering stabilizer?

Steering Stabilizers are nice, particularly at high speeds or to keep your wheels from being suddenly kicked to the side if you hit a rock or stump.

    Who needs one?:

    Anyone who rides hard
    Anyone that needs stability
    Anyone who wants an edge
Anyone who needs to go to work on Monday

    What size are the zerks?

    6mm or M6

What oil do I use in my Raptor 700?

Any oil you want that does not have friction modifiers (no writing on lower part of API circle on back of oil bottle). Always use multigrade oil that is consistent or optimal for your temperature range.

Can I use K&N oil on my foam filter?

No, use foam filter oil or engine oil, although filter oil is preferred because of stickiness.

What filter is better, a K&N or foam filter?

It depends on where you ride but general consensus is, if you ride in very dusty areas with very fine dust foam filters will be better than k&N, otherwise K&N will flow better but always use a prefilter (Outerwears) with a K&N.

The PC5 has an option to add Autotune and the PC3 does not. Plus:

Reduced size from PCIIIusb (less than half of the size of PCIII)
USB powered from computer (9 volt adapter is no longer needed for programming)
2 position map switching function built in (map switch not included)
Gear input (allows for map adjustment based on gear and speed)
Analog input (allows user to install any 0-5 volt sensor and build an adjustment table based on its input such as boost or temperature)
With gear position input connected the PCV is capable of allowing each cylinder to be mapped individually and for each gear (for example: on a 4 cylinder bike with a six speed transmission there could be up to 24 separate fuel tables).
Unit has a -100/+250% fuel change range (up from -100/+100%). This allows more adjustment range for 8 injector sportbikes
10 throttle position columns (up from 9 on PCIIIusb)
Enhanced “accel pump” utility (increased adjustment and sensitivity ranges)

    Coop we miss you brother..

I guess my biggest points to add would be to do the best work possible, dont hurry and scab things together so you can ride it and then just never do things up right. Ive seen too many guys do this exact thing and end up stuck somewhere in the middle of nowhere with a unit that wont run or something else goes catastrophically wrong and then they point fingers at the guys they got the parts from or the builder, its your machine its up to you to take good care of it. Also perform good maintenance, keep up on oil changes, air filter checks-changes, check radiator fluid for level or contamination, just alot of common sense things. Another thing, ive seen it all to often we have guys who will post that their machine wont run right but they keep on riding it to see if it gets better, dont do this guys.... this exact thing is what will have you pissed off and spending your rent money on the repairs. Decipher what is going on and get it taken care of. Dont mix and match parts either unless you know exactly what you are doing, theres a reason there are multiple peices of the same make in certain setup... I see a load of posts about needing maps for this setup or this setup etc etc..... Ill happily argue anyday that there is no better option than a dyno tune by someone who knows whats goin on, to hell with hp numbers you need that A/F ratio to be dead on. Spend 200 bucks on a dyno tune or spend $1000 plus fixing it because the map you aquired made it run...at the time....you pick. I see alot of questions about general maintenance and repair also, there is a manual download on the forum that is free and will help you tremendously, download it, print it, put it in a binder and treat it like a bible boys. When deciding on what aftermarket parts to use its all your choice, everyone is different with their preferences just as you are entitled to be, nonetheless experiment to find the niche, thats what most of us end up doing. Choosing builders to work with or to buy parts from, there are select big name builders who you can deal with and you just gotta wing it, find the guys who will give you the best customer service, forget about the cost... you want the guy that you call and is more than happy to help you out with an issue just because he appreciates his clientel. There are obviously alot of things your going to need advice on but most of it is trial and error. Although if you got your motor tore down and arent sure about something dont hesitate to call someone, throw it back together taking a chance is most likely to bite you in the biscuit. I could keep going but you get the jist of things, COMMON SENSE, its your best friend.
