Ok so I went and did a few mods today. The only thing performance related that I did was throw on a dg r series slip on. It was late when I got done but I decided to take it for a quick rip anyway.

When I started it up I had to tap the throttle so it would keep running. Afterward it idled fine and it sounds better than it did before. It in no way sounded rough running or anything.

After I got back from a 15min rip I reved it a few times to wake any sleeping neighbors and it backfired while letting off the throttle. Then I noticed that the pipe coming off the engine was glowing red.

I want to say that the glowing is normal but I rarely ride at night and never paid attention when I did.

I am not using an efi controller since dirt wheels said you do not need to with this slip on, the air filter box lid is on.

Does this sound normal?

Any suggestions?

You DO need a controller for this...you are running the bike too lean (or is it too rich? can't remember which way it goes). Dirt Wheels doesn't know shit about Raptors, listen to the advice on here and not a general magazine.

:wtf: You need a fuel controller it is to lean ,a free breathing pipe will make the motor want more air / fuel

Do you think it would be fine to take it out for an hour or so the way it is, or with the air box lid off? I won't have time to put the stock pipe on before my morning ride. But I will be sure to order a pc3 or pc5 tomorrow.

Hell, I bought mine from the dealer with the GYTR intake & 2 bros slip on and it had a 3 year warranty on it and they weren't worried. So, take that for what it's worth.

It's gonna backfire, crackle, and pop on you. People might look at you funny. Also, your headpipe might turn really blue.

That is pretty much what I was thinking. i am still under warrenty. Worse case I just put the old pipe back on and play stupid. I am married so I do have some experience playing stupid

They werent worried because they were idiots who didnt know better.. They too beleived Dirtwheels... :lol: I have yet to find anyone at the dealership who wasnt talking out of their ass 99% of the time. We have 3 Yami dealer in town and they are all clowns...

As far as riding it lean, its definatley a gamble.. Unless you are comfortable with some idiot $5 / hr kid tearing into your topend at the dealership if you warp the head or put a hole in the piston, etc. then I wouldnt run it. Its a short term / long term gamble IMO. You might get an hour of fun riding it and risk not having it for weeks and some kid screwing up your ride under warranty.. I am the type of guy who wants to do things the right way out of the shoot. I learned the hard way... :lol: Just my .02

Well I ran it for about 1 1/2 hours today and it went well. I took a little break here and there since the wife smokes, so I break more than I normally would. The pipe did not get hot enough to see it during the day light.

It sounds great and seems to run killer but I will have to make sure to take it off and put the stock pipe back on until I get an efi controller. Maybe I should just take the plunge and get my barker duals big 3 kit.

Really enjoying the Kenda Kutters though and I cannot wait until my fronts kutters get here. They definitely grab and throw most anything I run over

Theres a few places like TQS that will set you up with the Barkers / filter and a pre-programmed fuel controller for that specific setup. It will rip with that combo.. Good luck and enjoy... :thumb:

Yep get her tuned soon as u can but on the glowing red you can have a good tune and it still will glow red at night:thumb:

+1 my Barkers glow at night too...kinda cool. If you ceramic coat the headers you won't notice it anymore.

As per everybodies suggestion I decided to put the stock pipe back on. However I used some muffler sealant and now the slip on is stuck on. So it looks like I am stuck running it with the slip on - tuning for the time being. I just stop every 45min or so and take a small break. Even though my rad fan never seems to come on.

On the brighter side I went and ordered a big 3 kit (barker duals, trinity and K&N filter and a PC5). Hopefully it gets here soon so I can throw those bad boys on there
